”  I have a Dream”… Are you living yours?

In honor of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I thought it was fitting for the blog today to be focused around the ” I have a Dream Speech”. On August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King addressed a crowd of over 250,000 civil rights supporters, proving to be a defining moment in history.

Although there were many standout quotes spoken throughout the speech, one of the most quoted lines says “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” (Just sit back and think about that for a second).

Such commanding words that address many issues that some may still face even today. You are a representation of yourself. The way you present yourself to others, will be how they perceive you. Do not let someone have the advantage of claiming to know what you ” may be about” because of your skin color and not character. Dr. King had many dreams of his own that he addressed, so I ask you..What are your dreams?

What are you doing to ensure that it happens? Are you letting excuses get in the way of you achieving them? Did someone tell you that you were not good enough? Are you letting your upbringing determine your future? Are you blaming everything on someone else, and not taking accountability of your own actions? We all have our own personal obstacles that we face, but if you want something, then do what you need to do in order for it to happen. When our dream is too big, and doesn’t happen immediately we begin to doubt ourselves, we begin to question why we even thought of an idea so big. We begin to compare our journey to the person next to us. Make a vow to yourself, and tell yourself, ” I am good enough”. We put so much energy into the wrong things or people, and instead of elevating ourselves we end up looking lost, confused, disappointed and right at the beginning of the issue. I came up with a three point method that can be used in every area of your life called the 3H’s.

1.HUMAN

2.HUNGRY

3.HUMBLE

First, We are all HUMAN so of course we will fall and make mistakes from time to time so don’t be hard on yourself. But the key thing is to learn why the mistake occurred, change certain variables of the situation, and apply it to your life.

Secondly, We all strive for different things. Yet there are people who strive for the same things like you. Therefore you have to be HUNGRY and willing to put in the work to get results. No one will hand it to you on a silver platter. You do your part and God will handle the rest.

Lastly, It is extremely important to be HUMBLE. No one wants to be around someone who has a bad attitude, self centered, or not appreciative. It won’t get you far in life. Be yourself but watch how you treat others, especially if they are not on the same level as you.  You never know when you might need someone.

Use these 3 H’s to help you reach your dream. Ask yourself, what is my dream? How do I want to accomplish these dreams? Strategize and write down your plans on how you go about achieving it.

We all have a dream. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Don’t be afraid to take the road less traveled. If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was afraid to address the crowd of his dreams and goals for the country, do you think we would be where we are today as a nation? We may not be perfect, but I think we have come a long way since that time, and his legacy will always be remembered for being bold and staying true to himself. So I ask you, what are your dreams?
