“Alexa, Please restart 2020 over”

“2020 is going to be my year, I can just feel it”

I think many of us had that mindset going into 2020, but really had no idea what was really to come. Something about 2020 just seemed so exciting and promising. But before I continue let me just say that God is and will always be on the throne, and knows the beginning and ending to every and any situation before it happens, so we just have to pray, have faith, and apply wisdom during these trying times. 2020 can most definitely still be your year despite what you may see in front of you. This is the time to really apply all those bible verses you hear in church or have your mom say to you on a daily basis. 2 Corinthians 5:7 states, ” For we walk by faith, not by sight”. Even in the midst of the chaos, you have to believe the promises God has for your life will manifest despite what you currently see in front of you.

I can personally attest that the start of 2020 isn’t what I had envisioned for myself, but I know all things will eventually work out for my greater good. As a nation, we all sat in silence in shock when we received the news of Kobe Bryant’s death in January. I vividly remember just relaxing on my couch after returning home from church, and as I tried to think about what to cook for lunch I decided to scan Instagram. My jaw literally dropped to the floor as headlines read in bold,  “KOBE BRYANT DEAD”. I started thinking to myself who would play such a horrible prank. I immediately started refreshing my page, texting friends,  and googling reliable resources to see if this information was accurate. And unfortunately, it was confirmed to be true, along with the death of one of his daughters and seven other souls. I think at that moment a lot of people realized how life truly is short. You can be doing everything right, be very healthy, but when it is your time… it’s your time. Whether you knew of Kobe Bryant or not, I think everyone was affected deeply, which made you reflect on your own life.

Then along with other day to day news, the COVID-19 slowly started to creep upon us. I can be the first to say I truly thought it was a hoax or something that would eventually blow over- just like everything else. But each day I wake up, the updates don’t seem to be getting better. Some people were even ignorant to believe that the virus could not affect African Americans due to not hearing of any affected by the virus. But we quickly learned after the NBA got suspended to due a player testing positive, and some of our beloved celebrities stepping forward to confirm their positive status that this virus is very real, and can affect anybody no matter your race, age or background.

Right about now it seems as if the world is slowly coming to an end. Schools are shut down. Businesses are shut down. Conferences, Events, Weddings, Graduations are being canceled or postponed. Government officials are mandating people to say in their homes, now implementing curfews. People are going crazy in the stores trying to buy every and anything they can to stock up in their homes. Healthcare workers are burning out working around the clock. Flight tickets are currently the cheapest I have probably ever seen (but let’s be honest where are you traveling to now with the country in the condition that it is in, and travels bans being put in place to restricting passengers). It’s getting very real right about now.

So with the uncertainty of it all.. what can we do to protect ourselves and loved ones during this time? First and Foremost- Pray! Just ask God for protection and wisdom on how to move forward. Don’t spend your whole day watching CNN or the news. Of course, it is important to be updated in the news, but don’t let that consume your mind and the whole day. This to shall pass. Stay safe out there. Here are some Tips also below.

As Always…Thanks for Reading!
