Learning To Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin

“The moment will arrive when you are comfortable with who you are, and what you are– bald or old or fat or poor, successful or struggling- when you don’t feel the need to apologize for anything or to deny anything. To be comfortable in your own skin is the beginning of strength.”
― Charles B. Handy

In 2018 there are so many constant reminders of how things should ” really be” or “appear to be”, but does that fit who you really are? With a plethora of social media outlets, television shows, and movies,  those who have not figured out their purpose in life, start to impersonate those things.  Now in some situations, that may not be a bad thing, because there are good role models out there, but of course with good comes bad. So we have to be able to decipher the two wisely.

We live in a society where impressing the person next to us, instead of ourselves exists. We live in a society where instead of embracing and uplifting one another  we drag each other down mentally, physically, and verbally each day, just to lift our own spirits up. And we wonder why there are so many suicides each year. We have to learn to be accountable for our actions and our words. And that starts with knowing exactly who you are and what you want to represent. The moment you step out the house, remember you are representing a brand.. which is YOU. Figure out what truly makes you happy and go from there. There are so many professions out there…WHY? Because we are not all alike. Whatever path you do decide to choose, be the BEST at it. You have to be hungry and driven to achieve your goals. You might be going through a season where nothing seems to be in your favor. You can’t find a job, pay rent, struggling with classes, and yet everyone around you is at the top of their game. You have to remember everyone has their own season to shine. You don’t know the steps and hardships they took to get to that place. So just focus on your journey, and give it all you got, and it will all work out. Trust me, no one is going to upload a status or pictures of all the setbacks or failures occurring in their life at the moment. So you are not alone!

And don’t be afraid to keep some dreams to yourself. Not everyone around you, even the closest ones to you want to see you achieve more than them. They want you to be good, but not GREAT. Or simply they may talk you out of pursuing a passion of yours saying, ” YOU’RE TOO OLD, THERE’S NO WAY THEY WOULD CHOOSE YOU, YOU HAVE TO BE SKINNY TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT”. BLOCK out all that negativity and go for what you want. No matter the age, size, or profession. As long as you are still alive, then you have nothing to lose.

You are beautiful the way you are. You may not have had the best upbringing, but don’t let your beginning be your ending. You CAN and WILL be the change in your life and others.

Below I have the top 10 Tips to help finding yourself & being comfortable in your skin! (Of course there are so much more, but this is to help you get started)

1.Pray! You may not be religious but I promise you, it is the best feeling ever. Just have a quiet moment with God and ask him for peace, understanding and direction.

2.When you wake up and before you go to sleep each day, look in the mirror and tell yourself ” I love me & I am good enough “. So many times we seek love and approval from others and not ourselves. Let that change now.

3.Surround yourself with positivity. This is real simple, take anything or person out of your life that doesn’t contribute to your happiness or progression of goals.

4.Working out is not only to stay in shape, but gives you a peace of mind. Take your problems to the gym, and sweat it out. I always have to push myself to go workout, but when I’m done, I’m glad I made that decision. Looking and feeling your best, will give you a whole new outlook on life.

5.Travel! Whether its locally, nationally, or internationally… we only live once so why not! Plan ahead to get the best deals. Sometimes we have to take ourselves out of our environments and go somewhere else for peace and tranquility.

6.Take responsibility of your life! Stop thinking ” What if” and think ” Next time I will”. If you made a mistake, figure out why it occurred and move on. Holding yourself accountable is key to becoming a better you.

7.Stop tolerating nonsense in your life. Stop being a doormat to others. Don’t let others take advantage of your kind hearted spirit. It is ok to say NO sometimes.

8.SMILE! You might be going through some things, but trust me it could be worse, even if it seems like it is, so smile at the thought of you being able to wake up and see another day.

9.DON’T SETTLE! This goes for every area of your life. You are the best and you deserve the best. Don’t force yourself to get married, because everyone around you is or you’re almost 30. Timing is everything. Be patient. Stop settling and go for what you really want, even if you have to wait and put in time.

10.Be committed to yourself and your growth! Be clear with your identity to yourself and the goals you what to achieve.
